AGCGF Bats .923 For the 2007 Legislative Session and .750 for the 2008 Session!
In 2007, our Governmental Affairs Team went 12 for 13 on Construction Related Bills Including Big Wins on the Jessica Lunsford Glitch Bill & OCIP Bill.
During the 2008 regular legislative session -- the toughest in Florida’s history -- nine of 12 bills were passed or defeated as desired by our members for a 75 percent success rate. Florida’s legislators filed just over 2,500 bills for consideration during this 60-day session. Of this total, only 313 bills ultimately passed both the House and the Senate and will go on to Governor Crist for his approval or veto – the smallest number on record. More than 300 bills got halfway there, passing one chamber but not the other.

results in Tallahassee!
“A change to bring Florida’s statute of repose on construction defects down from 15 years to 10 years was absolutely necessary to respond to the realities of the insurance marketplace for general contractors, many of whom could not insure their projects for more than 10 years. Florida’s Associated General Contractors fought long and hard to get this bill passed in 2006. Some members of the construction industry wanted to hold out for a reduction down to 7 or 8 years. In my view as both an attorney and a legislator, such a reduction would have raised serious constitutional concerns and would not have passed the Legislature either in 2006 or in the foreseeable future. In the meantime, Florida’s general contractors would have been left exposed to significant liability with no insurance to cover that risk.”
Representative Bill Galvano
(R-Bradenton)
Sponsor of House Repose Bill (HB 1089)
“Moving the statute of repose on construction defects down from 15 years to 10 years was critical for this state’s general contractors, many of whom could not obtain insurance coverage on their projects for a period beyond 10 years. This essential change in the law would not have happened without the extraordinary efforts of Florida’s Associated General Contractors.”
Senator Charlie Clary (R-Destin)
Sponsor of Senate Repose Bill (SB 1940)
